31st July 2020 marks the last day of ELSA United Kingdom 2019/2020’s term, and what a journey it was for all of us and for ELSA UK which saw some incredible achievements and milestones.
We have successfully organised the 21st National Council Meeting (NCM) of ELSA United Kingdom in Leeds and the 22nd NCM in Birmingham. The NCMs brought our Local Groups closer together and provided an incredible platform to pass on training and knowledge to our local officers. Most importantly, we have welcomed new member and observer groups to our Network bringing our total to 25 Local Groups!
Of course, as national officers, we too have travelled far and wide to attend various international internal meetings to acquire knowledge and training as well as share experience with the representatives of the other 43 National Groups.
ELSA United Kingdom has also successfully organised a number of impressive international events. We hosted the very first Regional Rounds of the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition (EHRMCC). EHRMCC, now in its 8th edition, simulates the experience of pleading a case before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and is organised with the support of the Council of Europe. The weekend hosted by ELSA Nottingham gave the participants a chance not only to moot but also to socialise and network with students and professionals from all over the UK and Europe. Nottingham was also the place where the International Conference of ELSA (ICE) on Refugee Law took place. The Conference was a great success, with the presence of speakers from UNHCR, Amnesty International Kenya, academia and many local charities.
With regards to national opportunities, we have organised and supported marketing campaigns on Brexit and other topical issues and we have witnessed record-breaking involvement of our network in STEP and ELSA Delegations. We have also adapted COMMOOT and our daily activities to the virtual life in light of COVID-19 and have successfully carried out yet another Amicus essay competition together with ELSA Ireland.
We can only thank our Local Groups for entrusting us to develop some of the potential that ELSA United Kingdom has this year. We hope that our hard work this year has led ELSA UK towards becoming a more sustainable national network and we cannot wait to see where ELSA UK will go from here.
We wish the incoming National Board of ELSA United Kingdom 2020/2021 – Daniel, Nicholas, Freya, Kasia, Edwin, Pauline, Diarmaid, and Murad – the best of luck with a year that will, undoubtedly, be full of challenges and opportunities. We have full confidence in all of you!
We also wish to congratulate once again our Francesco and Sina on their positions as VP in charge of STEP and Deputy Secretary General of the International Board of ELSA 2020/2021. We are certain that you will make us all very proud.
For the last time with lots of ELSA Love,
Agata, Sina, Lauren, Polyxeni, Dora, Laura, Daniel, Francesco
