ELSA University of Glasgow has run events, both academic and social, over the past year. During the academic year 2019-2020, ELSA University of Glasgow hopes to organise events in all key areas and solidify its position as a new law society at the University of Glasgow.
ELSA University of Glasgow has organised workshops for the STEP spring cycle 2019 and autumn cycle 2019. During the workshops, attendees are advised on what STEP is, how to apply and how to make their application stand out.
For spring cycle 2019, ELSA University of Glasgow received and approved 5 applications – with increased attendance numbers in the autumn cycle 2019 workshop, we hope to see an increase in these numbers!
Academic Activities (AA)
In the spring of 2019, we organised an essay competition in collaboration with the Glasgow University Law Review. The essay question asked contestants to critically assess whether the refugee legal framework adequately protects LGBTQI asylum seekers.
We will launch another essay competition in January 2020. This academic year, we are also hoping to send teams to ELSA UK’s moot court competitions and to collaborate with other ELSA local groups on moots.
Seminars and Conferences (S&C)
ELSA University of Glasgow organised its first ELSA Day event on the 26th of November 2019. We were honoured to welcome Dr Pauline McBride as the speaker for the event, which focused on fake news and the growing concerns globally for their regulation. The event was a combined lecture and workshop, encouraging participants to discuss their knowledge and opinions about fake news and how the need for effective regulation and protection of human rights interact.
As a new law society at the University of Glasgow, we are committed to collaborating with other law societies to create a community for law students at Glasgow. With this in mind, we organised an event in September 2019 called Meet the Law Societies. The first half of the event consisted of short presentations from each law society. During the second half, students had an opportunity to mingle and talk to representatives of each society. The event was a huge success, with 70 people attending the first half and an additional 30 dropping in during the second half. We are planning on making the event a start of the year staple!
In addition to the Meet the Law Societies event, we organised a very successful Murder Mystery Evening in October 2019 to celebrate Halloween. The evening was an opportunity for attendees to hunt down spies, eat delicious food and figure out who killed old Mr Lefferts, all in a Cold War Berlin setting.
