XXIII NCM Glasgow
We were proud to host ELSA UK’s first ever online NCM, XXIII NCM Glasgow. As an organising committee, we worked with the national board to ensure that all in attendance had the best time possible. We started off with a video welcome from our OC, alongside a tour of the University of Glasgow to show our network our wonderful university. We then had speakers from the university, with Professor Jim Murdoch providing the opening address and the academic programme from Maria Fletcher. We also organised socials, including a quiz night featuring questions on everything from law to haunted houses in the USA.
During 2020-21 ELSA University of Glasgow has run both academic and social virtual events over the past year, solidifying our position as a relatively new law society at the University of Glasgow.
ELSA UofG organise two STEP workshops annually, and we hosted a virtual workshop for the first 2020/21 STEP cycle, focusing on advising attendees on what STEP is, the application process and how to make their application stand out.
We have seen consistent increases in applicants over the past few cycles which have translated to numerous successful applications, and we hope to improve this in the second 2020/21 cycle.
Academic Activities (AA)
We organise an annual essay competition in collaboration with the Glasgow University Law Review each spring term. Previous essay questions have included issues such as whether legal frameworks adequately protect LGBTQI asylum seekers and whether international and European labour law adequately protects young people at work, and we’re currently working on releasing on our third human rights focused question, keep your eyes peeled on our socials!
Seminars and Conferences (S&C)
We organised our first ELSA Day event on the in November 2019 and were honoured to welcome Dr Pauline McBride as the speaker for the event, which focused on fake news and the growing concerns globally for their regulation. The event was a combined lecture and workshop, encouraging participants to discuss their knowledge and opinions about fake news and how the need for effective regulation and protection of human rights interact.
As a relatively new law society at the University of Glasgow, we are committed to collaborating with other law societies to foster a community for law students at Glasgow. We successfully proposed and implemented a ‘Meet the Law Societies’ event, which we partake in every September, alongside the Freshers’ Fair. We also organised a very successful Murder Mystery Evening in October 2019 to celebrate Halloween, In-person pub quizzes and virtual Zoom quizzes, as well as regular socials.
